Acer Iconia Tab A500-10S16u 10.1 Inch Tablet Computer (Aluminum Metallic) Review

Although I purchased this as a Christmas gift for someone (who was EXTREMELY excited and happy, btw), I got a chance to get some hands-on time with this tablet myself.

First, as many others mention, it's heavy - or at least heavier than my iPad2 - and thicker. Not by much, mind you, but the difference is noticeable. From an 'outsiders' perspective, I really like this tablet. It has many features that I wish were available on my own tablet: USB, SD card slot, HDMI out, - see product details, above.

The display itself is very nice, clean, clear. The UI is neat, clean and mostly self explanatory. This is a VERY FAST unit! Acer appears to stayed relatively true to the Android base (Honeycomb, as of this writing), although some of the Acer-branded software bundled with the tablet appears to tweak underlying functions and those functions (and respective UIs) aren't as user friendly as they could be (i.e., how to close all the apps that are currently running in the background via multitasking -- still trying to figure that out).

Of course, with the great hardware integrated into this tablet, I find it difficult that anyone would think negatively about this tablet. Truth be told, when I heard the name "Acer", I had my doubts, but glowing reviews from Engadget and Gizmodo convinced me otherwise.

As an iPad2 user I find myself wanting one of these, but frankly, I might want a higher screen to truly convince me to abandon the iPad ship. Well, that and ICS.
